Think outside the bun. Haven’t you heard that before? Well I’m sure you have, from the Taco Bell commercials or even facebook ads. Do you even know who first created this amazing food? Haven’t you always wanted to meet the creator and thank him for his creations? Have you always wondered where bell came from? I know I have!
Glen Bell is the man responsible for bringing Mexican food into the fast food world with Taco Bell. Glen had returned home to California after serving in the Marine Corps during World War II. He started his first food business buy serving hot dogs on the streets. He then realized there was a market for alternatives. Glen’s idea about selling tacos became extremely popular.
Bell began selling tacos for 19 cents from a side window in one of his stands. His tacos sold so well that he and a partner opened three Taco Tias. Wanting to grow his business Glen decided to sell Taco Tias and opened four El Tacos with new partnership. He then decided to go solo, so he sold his four El Tacos to his partners and opened his first Taco Bell in 1962
Glen never forgot the first taco buyer at his hotdog stand in San Bernardino, California. “He was dressed in a suit and as he bit into the taco the juice ran down his sleeve and dripped on his tie.” I thought, “Uh-oh we’ve lost this one.” But he came back amazingly enough, and said, “That was good, gimme another.”
Eventually in 1964 everyone has probably eaten at Taco Bell, but did you know “bell’ came from the founder’s name Glen Bell. He first started selling hot dogs paired with a sauce that later became Taco Bell’s hot sauce. He experimented with ways to prepare tacos quickly and efficiently. He also had the novel idea of frying the taco shells ahead of time. Bell experimented with a deep fryer, folding the tortilla, dipping it in cooking oil, and tossing it into the deep fryer. His invention popularized the hard shell taco while also speeding up the preparation process….
