A Nation at Risk Part 1: A Nation at Risk was and is a document that in essence gave/gives a call to arms to wake up the American nation in regards to mediocrity within education. The report changed high schools to include more necessary core classes for the American high school student and brought about other forms of changes for American schools. It has brought about both negative and positive results in the reform towards successful education of all students. It was imperative to bring about awareness of the decline in educational results, but the modes of transition are still in need of great adjustments.
Overall, the A Nation at Risk document set in motion the road for alteration within the American education system which proves to still be of essence today. After the report many changes were incorporated into the American schools. Immediately following the report, the government set minimum state and local high school graduation requirements to provide heavy doses of English, math, science, social studies, and for the college-bound student, 2 years of a foreign language. The Department of Education released another document call A Nation Accountable, twenty-five years later.
It states as of 2005 almost 65% of high school graduates were taking this recommended course work which was four times the amount of those in 1983. In the report, it discussed these alterations to include the states having had developed content standards and tests that report students’ knowledge, beginning of state and local academic standards and standards-based testing, federal legislation requiring the states receiving federal aid for education to have these academic standards and tests in certain grades, as well as the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.
All of these changes ensued in response to the call to reform by A Nation at Risk. A Nation at Risk brought about all these changes, whether they are having positive or negative effects is another question in and of itself. Some negative outcomes may be all the red tape and stress that is brought about in regards to so much documentation and testing of the students. The accountability structures that have been set in place in regards to educators has increased, which can creates stress to point of asking the question as to whether or not teachers are able to provide the support necessary in the classroom to help students ecome successful without focusing too much on teaching to the test or whether or not they will lose their job. This trails down to the student which can create a less productive learning environment. Some positive outcomes are that more is being done to try to change the declining standards of education and the need for reform has been awakened. There is much at debate when it comes to what transitions are the best to be incorporated into the American education system, but without such a report as A Nation at Risk, it is possible that no changes may ever have been considered important.
A Nation at Risk proved to be imperative to stimulate change throughout the United States education. To this day, A Nation at Risk is still debated over and discussed as to the correct course the nation should take in regards to making the changes necessary to create the education that will bring about the desired results of necessary preparation of future generations. So far none of the changes at hand have brought about the complete desired results of neither the report nor the status to which the American government is requiring education to coincide.
For instance the NCLB is great in regards to the idea of accountability, but how it is structured in going about holding educators responsible is greatly flawed. A Nation at Risk has definitely created quite a stir, but there is much to be done to gain the necessary results into what is the right way for students to acquire the best education for all the involved. Largely, A Nation at Risk gained much attention, focusing the American nation to the fact that education needs to evolve with the times. How the report went about stating what should be done and the changes that have ensued is under much debate.

The report states the U. S. nation is still a nation at risk, but is now, also, a nation informed, accountable, and recognizes there is much work to be done. The report summarizes that education is still not keeping up with the ever growing desired results set forth, but since the NCLB, there is actual data to be able to take a comprehensive look into schools, and further more consider structural reforms to go beyond the current efforts of the day. This has ensured that education begin to receive the much needed attention on reform in creating an education that is conducive in preparing present students for the future in regards to all aspects that have were addressed in the report such as personally as well as economically. Another important positive outcome that was a result of A Nation at Risk was the in depth data collection process that began in regards to student achievements and testing.
Although, the process to which this data is obtained is still in much debate, it has been able to give further insight as well as comparative year-to-year results of information in regards to how the schools are succeeding or failing comparatively in their students results. These issues alone stem great positive effects on education in America from the report A Nation at Risk. Negative effects have, also, come about due to the report A Nation at Risk.
Firstly the report came across as a hit to many educators and may have caused the loss of many great teachers within districts through the negative processes of reform. Extreme testing, as result of the report to gain more information in regards to education, has increased stress non only in regards to educators, but also, within the students. Unfortunately, the results of the several changes that have been made have not proven there has been an increase in the quality of education the students are receiving.
Many changes have proven to possibly be more unconstructive than they are worth, while costing a great deal of money and effort without having brought about increased successful results. Research shows many adults are still not prepared for college or the work force and there are still a great many drop outs which create issues economically and socially as well as futuristically. There are many aspects to the report A Nation at Risk. The report was positive in creating a driving force to strive for positive education reform.
Unfortunately, the report has, also, had negative implications in regards to crude navigation of information and restructuring of education processes. Hopefully soon, there will be positive methods of reform to build up the positive aspects of the report to create an education that is crucial and successful for America’s present and future generations. Many aspects are still up for debate such as the accuracy of the data that was incorporated in the report, the role the federal government involvement, as well as the implementation and types of reform to create a continuous developing education. All in all, A Nation at Risk is referred to in the aspects of reform for American education. Educational experts see few positive aspects in regards to the report. James Guthrie and Matthew Springer of Peabody College of Vanderbilt University wrote a report entitled A Nation at Risk Revisited: Did “Wrong” Reasoning Result in “Right” Results? At What Cost? n which they state: “NAR motivated much that is right for American Education. The report propelled a move from measuring school quality by resources received and onto a plane where performance is judged on outcomes students’ achieve. This article asserts that this shift in the education appraisal paradigm is likely, in the long run, to render the nation’s education system more effective for students and more useful for the larger society. ” Al Shanker saw the report as an opportunity to address some of the challenges facing public education and for educators to take the high road in response to the report.
He was able to help bring about the standards movement that is still in play today. Higher standards of certification and professionalism of teachers was also another positive movement forward. The consensus among most education professionals render the report as serious in nature and a great wake-up call to the nation that educational reform is indeed imperative. Educational experts see many negative aspects of the report. Some such as Guthrie and Springer believe that the report contained inaccurate findings.
The criticism of the report was difficult for many educators and officials to swallow. Teachers have gotten the brunt of the blame in regards to failure of student education, while other factors have been overlooked such as lack of family support and society issues. The current reports render that the desired outcomes in education are still far below what they are supposed to have reached. All the stress and pressure to teaching in regards to get the necessary results for testing has created a severe amount of negative pressure both on educators and students.
The report has resulted in reform that stems from teachers having to take quality time away from supporting their students to the red tape of educational politics. Representative Timothy Walberg of Michigan referenced teachers as having so much paperwork and regulation from government that many question whether or not they are cut out to even be teachers. Many educators believe that much reform stemming from the report has created negative aspects and in which have created no major positive statistics to show for it.
While some educational experts were able to take the information from A Nation at Risk and promote strides forward in reforming education, others feel negative towards the report. Reports since 1983 prove the desired results in education have yet to be obtained. Education professionals feel that reform may be necessary, but the right kind of reform has yet to appear. There are many aspects to take into consideration in regards to education; therefore reform needs to address all these perspectives. Educational experts do agree that transition forward in education is essential.
